This historic “Tiger’s Head” or “Lion’s Head” postage stamp is among Afghanistan’s earliest and most important philatelic issues, first issued during the reign of Amir Sher Ali Khan in 1871. The imperforate stamp features a distinctive circular, hand-engraved design with an animal motif at the center, surrounded by intricate floral and geometric ornamentation and inscriptions incorporating dates from the Islamic Solar calendar. Individually engraved and produced on composite sheets, these early Afghan stamps are highly valued by philatelists for their rarity, craftsmanship, and historical significance as representatives of Afghanistan’s first postage issues.
